Havana Cuban Cigar

If you’re looking at purchasing cigars and are not sure of what to look for or what to do with them, then read on. Here are some points to keep in mind...

• Cigars are measured by their length (inches) and their ring gauge (64ths of an inch). Each size and shape has a different name. For example a Cohiba Esplandido is 7" x 47. It is 7 inches long and 4 7/64ths of an inch in diameter.
• If you’re not sure of a size to choose from, start with something in the middle and work toward something smaller or bigger. A good start might be in the Corona size range. While not all Coronas are the exact same size they are usually around 5 1/2" x 42.
• The thicker the cigar, the fuller the flavour. The reason being is that there is more room to play with the tobacco blends when being rolled.
• If you smoke more than one a day, you'll need to smoke the lightest one first. Otherwise, you will not taste any difference after that.
• Fillers dictate the flavour of a cigar, however the wrapper can have some impact on the overall taste. If you prefer sweeter flavours, stick to cigars with dark and oily wrappers. A lighter wrapper will have a dry smoke.
• After purchase, a cigar must be kept in a humidor (box with humidity control) where relative humidity can be monitored and maintained between 65 and 70 percent.
• Cigars smoke best when they are slightly soft to the touch but spring back once released.
• Band on or off... the eternal war. This is a battle that has been going for a while. There is no correct answer. However, if you choose to take it off make sure you smoke it part way first so that the smoke will heat up the gum that hold it on. Otherwise you risk, tearing and damaging a perfectly good cigar.
• Use only butane or wood matches to light your cigar. Cardboard matches and petrol lighters will add those flavours to your cigar. Roll the cigar as you light it. This makes an even light and helps maintain an even burn rate.
• Most important... DO NOT INHALE... unless of course you enjoy feeling ill. Gently draw the smoke into your mouth and enjoy the flavours as they float into your mouth. Draw every minute or so, otherwise it will go out.
• Do not flick or tap your ashes, simply let them drop when they are ready. An ashtray might be a good investment.
• When you’re finished with your Havana (Cuban cigar) simply let it go out on its own accord. Do not stub it out.
